Detroit in 1909 was a city of roughly 465,000 people by the 1910 census, and its fortunes were rising with the automobile trade as Ford, Packard, and other makers expanded their plants. The Detroit Tigers, the American League club that had won its first pennant in 1907, played at Bennett Park near Corktown, and their manager Hughie Jennings and star outfielder Ty Cobb drew the city's attention that summer. Cobb was chasing a batting title and led the league in stolen bases, and his aggressive style made him a favorite with local fans. For working families, baseball was among the most accessible public entertainments of the era, and a team portrait like this one showed the players who carried the city's hopes. That fall the Tigers reached the World Series, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates in seven games.
