In 1921 Baltimore was a busy port city of roughly 730,000 people, with shipping, canning, clothing manufacture, and the steel works at Sparrows Point, which Bethlehem Steel had opened a few years earlier, drawing thousands of workers. Its Baltimore Orioles played in the International League, a high-level minor league that was among the strongest outside the majors, and the club was owned and run by Jack Dunn, who was known for developing young players. Games at the team's ballpark drew working-class fans from the neighborhoods around the harbor and rail yards, and a winning season could fill the stands with the kind of civic pride that cities attached to their local teams. The team's name recalled the city's older ties to the Orioles tradition, and for many residents the club was simply the best entertainment in town.
