In 1913 the Brooklyn club was still playing at Washington Park, the wooden ballpark near the Gowanus area, while owner Charles Ebbets was finishing the concrete grandstand of his new park in Flatbush. The team was known as the Superbas that season, a name borrowed from a vaudeville troupe, and it would soon become the Robins. Brooklyn had been a separate city until 1898, when it merged into Greater New York, and fans there still thought of the team as their own civic pride. Streetcars carried crowds from neighborhoods across the borough to the grounds, and a Saturday game drew working men, shopkeepers, and families. The photograph records a team gathered for the camera in a season that marked the end of the old park and the start of a new era for Brooklyn baseball.
