Brooklyn, New York, in 1914 was a borough of more than a million people, with factories, piers, and the Navy Yard along its waterfront, and it was a city of neighborhood loyalties. That year the Federal League's Brooklyn club, nicknamed the Tip-Ups, was in its second season as an independent major league that challenged the established National and American Leagues for players and fans. The team was backed by Robert Ward, whose family's Tip-Top Bread company gave the club its popular name. Brooklyn fans followed the Federal League team closely, though the rival league's money troubles and its eventual collapse after 1915 would soon reshape baseball in the borough.
