In 1911 Brooklyn was still a separate city across the East River from Manhattan, though it had been folded into Greater New York in 1898. Its population had passed one million, and its waterfront, sugar refineries, factories, and the Navy Yard supplied jobs for a large working-class population. Subway and trolley lines were pulling residents farther into the borough's neighborhoods, and the Brooklyn Bridge, opened in 1883, still carried heavy traffic in both directions. The team in this photograph, then known as the Brooklyn Superbas, played at Washington Park in South Brooklyn, where a loyal local crowd followed the club as a point of civic pride. Baseball in that era was a working man's entertainment, and a team photograph like this one would have been shared widely among the fans who filled the grandstands.
