In 1911 the St. Louis Browns played for a city still living off the attention it had drawn from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, which had brought visitors from around the world to the western edge of town. St. Louis was a major center of brewing, shoemaking, and machinery, and factory and freight workers filled the bleachers on Saturday afternoons and holidays when they could get away. The players pictured here were names printed daily in English- and German-language papers, and their fortunes were a common topic at workplaces and church picnics. The club had never won an American League pennant, and this portrait shows a team that its neighbors followed as a local institution rather than as champions.
