In 1910, St. Louis was a city of about 687,000 people and one of the country's major rail and manufacturing centers, with shoe factories, tobacco works, and breweries employing large numbers of workers. The National League club known as the Cardinals played at Sportsman's Park on the city's north side, a ballpark it shared with the American League Browns, and baseball drew crowds from across a city that was still proud of the 1904 World's Fair it had hosted a few years earlier. Roger Bresnahan, a catcher who doubled as the team's player-manager, led the club that season, and the roster in this photograph reflects the era's rosters of mustached players in heavy wool uniforms. For local fans, the team was a daily topic in streetcar talk, newspaper sports pages, and saloon conversation, part of a city that measured itself by its industry and its civic spectacle.
