In 1909 the St. Louis Cardinals were a National League club playing at Robison Field on the city's north side, while the American League Browns played across town, so the city had two professional teams competing for the same fans. The Cardinals were a weak team that season, and their owners, the Robison brothers, were known more for running a business than for winning pennants. St. Louis at that time was one of the largest industrial cities in the country, with shoe factories, breweries, tobacco works, and meatpacking houses, and its 1910 census count would reach nearly 700,000. Baseball drew crowds of working men on weekday afternoons and Sunday doubleheaders, and a team photograph like this one was a way for a city proud of its growth to see its own club.
