St. Louis in 1909 was one of the largest cities in the country, with a population approaching 700,000, and its manufacturers, shoe and tobacco companies, and rail yards drew workers from across the Midwest. The St. Louis Browns, a charter-era American League club that had moved to the city in 1902, played at Sportsman's Park on the city's north side, a ballpark it shared with the National League Cardinals. Baseball was one of the few entertainments that crossed the city's neighborhoods, and a team portrait like this one would have been bought and kept by fans who followed the club through the streetcar-era crowds that filled the grandstands on weekends. The city was still a few years away from the crowds and civic pride of its later pennant seasons, but in 1909 the Browns were a fixture of its daily life.
