St. Louis in 1911 was one of the largest cities in the country, with about 680,000 residents by the 1910 census, and it ran on rail freight, meatpacking, brewing, and shoe manufacturing. The National League Cardinals, a club that had taken its current nickname in 1900, drew fans from the city's streetcar neighborhoods, where working families often spent a Saturday afternoon at the ballpark. Baseball was then a serious civic pastime, and the Cardinals shared the city's sporting attention with the American League Browns, who played in the same part of town. Photographs like this one show how a crowd gathered around the game was as much a part of city life as the factories and rail yards that employed most of its men.
