In 1910 St. Louis counted about 687,000 residents in the federal census, and the city was still one of the largest in the country, a river port where the Mississippi barge traffic met a dense web of railroads. Its neighborhoods were packed with German, Irish, and African American families, along with newer arrivals from Eastern and Southern Europe, many of whom worked in the factories and freight yards along the riverfront. The American League, whose president Ban Johnson ran the circuit from Chicago, had given the Browns a place among the league's regular franchises, and a team photograph like this one showed the players as local figures whose games were followed in newspapers across the city. Baseball was a Saturday and holiday pastime for working families, and the club's squad belonged to the same public life as the streetcars and parades that filled the city's streets.
