New York in 1903 was a city of about three and a half million people, newly joined into Greater New York after consolidation in 1898. Its elevated lines and streetcars carried crowds from Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to the ballparks each spring, many of them clerks, dockworkers, and factory hands who had few free afternoons. That year the American League's New York entry, the Highlanders, joined the Giants and the Brooklyn club in competing for fans across the city. Baseball was also tied to ward politics and to newspapers that printed scores and standings on their front pages.
