In 1904, the Polo Grounds sat on the rise of Coogan's Bluff at the northern edge of Manhattan, and it was home to the New York Giants, the city's best-known baseball club. That year New York was only six years into its consolidation as Greater New York, and the island's population was swelling with workers from the tenements, the docks, and the garment and printing trades. Ballpark crowds drew heavily from those neighborhoods, and the Giants' pennant race that summer kept the city's newspapers and saloons arguing over every game. The picture shows the Cincinnati club visiting the ground, a reminder that the National League still ran on rail travel between eastern and midwestern cities. Later that fall the city's first subway line opened, carrying Manhattanites north toward the ballpark in far larger numbers than the old elevated trains had.
