West Point, New York, in 1909 was a small garrison community on the bluffs above the Hudson River, where the United States Military Academy trained Army officers and set the rhythm of local life. Football had become the cadets' most visible sport, and it still carried the weight of the national debate that followed the deadly injuries of 1905 and 1906, when President Theodore Roosevelt pressed colleges to reform a rough game. Rule changes after those years opened the field to the forward pass, but crowds still filled the grounds for cadet games. Visitors came by train and riverboat, and families, alumni, and officers from nearby posts treated these afternoons as public occasions as much as contests.
