Buffalo, New York, in 1913 was one of the busiest freight ports on the Great Lakes, where the Erie Canal met Lake Erie and grain, coal, and iron ore moved through a crowded harbor lined with towering elevators. The city had grown past 400,000 residents, and its wealth came from flour milling, grain trade, railroad yards, and the steel works that had been spreading down the lakeshore toward Lackawanna since the early 1900s. Many of the families who could afford boats and club dues had made their money in those trades, and a yacht club on the water signaled that standing. Summer racing on the lake was a regular social event for the city's business families, and this photograph records that world of sails and waterfront leisure set against a working harbor.
