In 1902, the Harlem River was one of New York City's busiest stretches of water for amateur rowing, separating Manhattan from the Bronx and lined with boathouses and clubs. The city had been consolidated into the five boroughs only four years earlier, in 1898, and its population had passed three million, so the river sat in the middle of a fast-growing metropolis. Its banks also carried elevated rail lines, factories, and the Harlem River Speedway, where carriages and early automobiles drew crowds on warm afternoons. Club parades and regattas like this one were social events as much as athletic ones, with members in uniform, flags on the water, and spectators gathering along the shore. Rowing was a point of civic pride for working and middle-class New Yorkers alike, and many clubs were proud of their local ties.
