Morris Park Race Track sat in the Westchester County town of Pelham in 1903, just beyond the northern edge of New York City, where the Bronx would not be annexed until 1914. Opened in the late 1880s, it drew wealthy New Yorkers by carriage, rail, and trolley to watch thoroughbreds run on a course that was one of the fashionable stops of the Gilded Age turf. The photograph's sweep of grandstands, infield, and crowds captures a sport that depended on big-money owners, betting, and a steady stream of spectators from the city. Racing in New York was increasingly contested in these years, and the surrounding suburban land was being subdivided as the metropolitan area pushed outward.
