Arcadia, in the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles, took its identity in 1908 from Rancho Santa Anita, the land of the eccentric mining fortune holder Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin. Baldwin had built a racetrack on the ranch in 1907, and it drew wealthy horse owners and crowds from Los Angeles, which was then growing fast on the strength of citrus, oil, and new rail and electric streetcar links. The surrounding valley was largely orchards and vineyards, and the track sat among them as a showpiece of Baldwin's sporting ambitions. Racing ended in California in 1909 after a state law banned betting on the tracks, and the era of big purses at Santa Anita closed with it.
