Haskins Field, photographed in 1908, sat at Drake, the central Iowa college community whose university took its name from Francis Marion Drake, a former Iowa governor who backed the school's founding. By 1908 the university's athletics drew students, faculty and townspeople to open-air grounds like this one, where football and track meets were among the few public entertainments available to local residents. Iowa's economy at the time rested largely on farming, with corn and hogs shipped out by rail, and the railroads also carried students, teams and spectators between campuses and nearby towns. The field reflects a period when organized college sport was becoming a regular part of Midwestern civic and social life.
