Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, was the setting for this 1914 panoramic photograph, and the city was then the state capital and a center of insurance and commerce. The university, founded in 1881 by members of the Disciples of Christ and named for Francis Marion Drake, a former Iowa governor, had grown into one of the city's best-known institutions. Football and other intercollegiate sports were drawing larger crowds to campus fields in the 1910s, and fans from the city and surrounding towns turned out for games as part of a broader enthusiasm for college athletics.
