In 1914, San Francisco was a city still rebuilding after the 1906 earthquake and fire, with a population of roughly 450,000 and a economy built on its harbor, shipping, and rail links to the rest of the country. Ewing Field, shown here as a sporting ground, reflected the city's appetite for organized athletics in those years, when baseball and track events drew large crowds of working residents on weekends. Civic leaders were also busy preparing for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, due to open in 1915, which was meant to show the world that the city had recovered. Residents of the day would have known the field as one of the places where neighborhood rivalries and citywide pride played out in public.
