Washington Park, Los Angeles, California, in 1911 was the home field of the city's Pacific Coast League baseball club, the Angels, and crowds there turned out for a sport that had become a steady part of civic life. The city had grown quickly, with its population passing 300,000 by 1910, and it was adding railroads, oil fields, and a growing harbor at San Pedro that tied it to shipping. The city was also divided by labor and political fights, most visibly after the bombing of the Los Angeles Times building in October 1910, which killed twenty-one people and left a lasting mark on local politics. Residents of that day would have known the ballpark as a gathering place for families and a source of civic pride, a place where the city's expanding population met on Saturdays and holidays.
