Seattle in 1907 was a rebuilt city of lumber mills, shipyards, and wharves, and its economy still rode on the Klondike and Alaska trade that had poured through its harbor since the gold rush of the late 1890s. Fast growth had brought streetcars, new neighborhoods, and a population eager for public entertainment. Baseball drew especially large crowds, and a well-kept ball ground like Dugdale Athletic Park gave working families a place to spend a Saturday afternoon. This photograph records that enthusiasm: a wide view of an enclosed field, with spectators and grandstands that show how seriously the city took its sport in the years before the Pacific Northwest's later expositions and the opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal.
