Silver Lake, a small village in Summit County, Ohio, was a place where farm families and village residents in 1905 still relied on their own recreation grounds, and a ballpark like this one served as a gathering spot for the whole community. The county's economy was shifting fast that decade, since Akron had become a center of rubber manufacturing, and factory workers and their neighbors in nearby towns often turned to baseball as their main weekend entertainment. Local clubs, many of them sponsored by churches, lodges, or employers, played on Saturday afternoons and holidays, and crowds of spectators came by foot, by horse and buggy, or on the interurban electric lines that linked the valley towns to Akron and Cuyahoga Falls. Baseball in the 1900s carried a strong sense of civic pride, and for people in a village like Silver Lake, a home team was a point of local identity.
