Case School of Applied Science and Mount Union College met on the football field in 1914, during a period when college football in Ohio was still young and loosely organized. Case drew its students from Cleveland, which had grown past half a million residents by 1910 and was becoming a major center of oil refining, steelmaking, and manufacturing on the Lake Erie shore. Mount Union, a small college in Alliance affiliated with the Methodist Church, drew its loyal crowds from a smaller industrial town in northeastern Ohio. For both schools, games like this one gave students, alumni, and local townspeople a shared occasion, and the engineering-minded students at Case represented the technical training that the region's factories increasingly demanded.
