Cleveland in 1915 was one of the largest cities in the United States, with its population swelling on the strength of steel mills, oil refining, shipbuilding and metal fabrication along the Cuyahoga River and the Lake Erie shore. Immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe filled the neighborhoods that ringed the factories, and the city's politics and civic life were shaped by those working communities. Sports drew large crowds across the city, and a stadium like Brookside gave residents a place to gather on weekends and holidays. This panoramic view records one of those gatherings at Brookside in 1915, when the city's industrial growth and its appetite for public entertainment were both at a high point.
