In 1915 Cleveland was a fast-growing industrial city, and the White Motor Company, founded there in 1900, was one of the automobile makers that helped build its reputation. Many manufacturers of that era sponsored company athletic clubs, and the White Autos team likely drew on the firm's name and workforce. Ohio towns of the period, many built around mills, mines, and rail yards, supported their own ball clubs, and a game against the Omaha Brookside side would have drawn neighbors who knew both teams. Fretter's panorama captures a moment when factory loyalty, local pride, and a growing enthusiasm for organized sport met on an open field.
