In 1916 Cincinnati was a major Ohio River manufacturing city with a population approaching 400,000. Its economy rested on machine tools, soap and candles, meatpacking, and piano building, and its rail lines and river wharves moved goods across the Midwest. The automobile was reshaping city life that decade, and the speedway shown here reflects the popularity of motor racing, when promoters across the country built fast oval tracks to draw crowds of spectators. Such venues were often short-lived, and their fortunes depended on local investors, the reliability of the new cars, and public appetite for speed. Cincinnati residents of the period knew their city chiefly for industry and its riverfront, and a motor track was a new kind of attraction for them.
