In 1916, West Fairport sat on the Lake Erie shore of Lake County, Ohio, where the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ran tracks down to the water so that grain could move from railcars into lake vessels. Lake freight and rail traffic defined the local economy, and the harbor at the mouth of the Grand River handled cargo for nearby Painesville and the farms of the interior. Europe was already at war that year, and American grain and other farm goods were in heavy demand abroad, which kept elevators and docks busy. The United States had not yet entered the conflict, and most residents still measured their town's prosperity by the boats, trains, and warehouses along the water.
