Cincinnati in 1916 was still recovering from the Ohio River flood of 1913, which had driven thousands from their homes and left the riverfront and low-lying neighborhoods to rebuild. Streetcar lines carried workers and families between the basin and outlying neighborhoods, and the city's baseball crowds filled Redland Field on the West End. That summer, Ohio National Guard units were called up for duty on the Mexican border, and local newspapers ran daily reports on the men leaving town. Speed contests on the new motor tracks drew large crowds of working people who came to see the newest machines, and the sport was still new enough that a race day felt like an event worth traveling across town to see.
