Cleveland's ball club was photographed in 1916, when the city was one of the largest manufacturing centers in the Midwest and a busy Lake Erie port. Its factories, steel mills, and shipping drew workers from across Ohio and from Europe, and the city's population had grown quickly over the previous two decades. The team had been called the Naps for years after its player-manager, Napoleon Lajoie, but it became the Indians in 1915, and that name was still new when this group posed together. Baseball was a daily topic in Cleveland's neighborhoods, streetcar lines carried fans to League Park on the east side, and the Saturday game was a shared civic ritual for working families. The panoramic view of the squad captures the team as local residents knew it on the eve of the United States' entry into the First World War.
