Cleveland's 1920 ball club was on its way to its first world championship, but the season had already been shadowed by tragedy when shortstop Ray Chapman was struck by a pitch in New York in August and died the next morning. Tris Speaker, the center fielder who also managed the team, had led the Indians to the American League pennant that fall. The city counted roughly 800,000 residents in the 1920 census, making it the nation's fifth-largest city, and its factories were running hard as Prohibition took effect that January. In October, the World Series against Brooklyn gave the whole city a reason to crowd around bulletin boards and follow every game.
