In 1922, Cleveland's ball club was a team of a city still building on its industrial growth, with steel, machinery, and automobile parts keeping its mills and plants busy along the Cuyahoga River and the lakefront. Tris Speaker, the center fielder who had managed the Indians since 1919, was still leading the club, and the team played its home games at League Park, where crowds arrived by streetcar from the neighborhoods on the east and west sides. Prohibition, in force since early 1920, had changed how many residents spent their evenings, while ballgames, Sunday outings, and newspaper box scores remained a common point of talk among workers and their families. This panoramic group photograph shows a squad whose fans saw it as part of everyday life in a city that measured itself by its factories and its ballpark.
