Cleveland's 1936 ball club played in a city still recovering from the Great Depression, when many steel mills, machine shops, and auto parts plants ran on reduced schedules and many families depended on relief. Steve O'Neill managed the Indians that year, and Hal Trosky and Earl Averill were among the sluggers that Cleveland fans followed closely. The lakefront Great Lakes Exposition, which opened that summer, drew crowds downtown, and the city's new Municipal Stadium stood ready for big weekend games. In August, a seventeen-year-old pitcher from Van Meter, Iowa, named Bob Feller made his major league debut for Cleveland, and his arrival gave residents a new young star to discuss.
