In 1910 Cleveland was an industrial city of about 560,000 people, with steel mills, shipbuilding, and oil refining along the Cuyahoga River and the Lake Erie shore. Its American League club, known as the Naps after star second baseman Napoleon "Nap" Lajoie, played at League Park on the city's East Side, and baseball drew large crowds from the factory neighborhoods. Fans followed the team in the city's daily newspapers, and the ballpark was a common meeting place for working families on weekend afternoons. The Haines Photo Company of Conneaut, Ohio, made this group portrait, which shows the players posed together as a record of the team that season.
