Cleveland's baseball club, which had taken the nickname Indians in 1915, photographed in 1921 as the team that had won the 1920 World Series over the Brooklyn Robins, five games to two, the first championship in the club's history. The city was a major manufacturing center, with steel mills, machine shops, and oil refining along the Cuyahoga River and the Lake Erie shipping lanes, and its population was approaching 800,000. Crowds filled League Park on the city's East Side, where working families came to see the team after a summer in which the club's shortstop, Ray Chapman, had been killed by a pitch in August 1920. The 1921 season was a harder one for the club, which finished well behind the New York Yankees, but the championship still gave Clevelanders a rare national title to celebrate.
