Pittsburgh and Cincinnati in 1905 shows a National League game in which the Pirates, led on the field by player-manager Fred Clarke, finished second to the New York Giants that season. Electric streetcar lines had reached most neighborhoods in both river cities by then, so clerks and mill hands could leave work early and ride out to the grounds on a Saturday afternoon. Newspapers in each city printed the box scores the next morning for readers who had not made it through the gate. The photographer, George R. Lawrence, specialized in wide views of cities and large public gatherings, and his camera was well suited to fitting an entire stadium crowd into a single frame.
