In 1905, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati met on the ballfield as National League rivals, and the games drew working families on Saturdays and holidays as well as the regular afternoon crowds. Pittsburgh's team played at Exposition Park, where shortstop Honus Wagner was already the league's best-known player. Cincinnati's Reds played at the Palace of the Fans, a grandstand park the city had built in 1902. Off the field, Pittsburgh was a city of steel mills and railroad yards along its three rivers, while Cincinnati was known for its breweries, meatpacking houses and machine shops on the Ohio River. Baseball gave both cities a shared public pastime that cut across the factory and shop jobs of their residents.
