West Fairport, on the Lake Erie shore of Lake County, Ohio, was a working lakefront in 1916, when the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's grain elevators stood at the water's edge to receive cargo from lake freighters. Grain and other bulk goods moved through the Great Lakes to eastern markets, and rail spurs carried the cargo inland, so the elevators tied the local economy to shipping schedules and freight traffic. That year, Europe was at war, and American grain and foodstuffs were in heavy demand from the Allied nations, which kept lake ports busy through the season. Residents of the lakeside villages in this stretch of Ohio knew their towns mainly by the docks, the rail yards, and the boats that came and went with the seasons.
