Youngstown in 1910 was a city of roughly 79,000 people, and the Mahoning Valley's steel trade had grown into the center of its economy. The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, formed in 1900, had brought large-scale tube and sheet production to the valley, and its expansion drew new arrivals from southern and eastern Europe to work the mills. Rail lines, including the Pennsylvania and Erie systems, moved coal, ore and finished steel through the city's yards and along the river valley. Local residents of the period would have measured the city's fortunes by mill shifts, payrolls and the steady arrival of new families into neighborhoods on the hillsides.
