St. Louis, Missouri, in 1910 was one of the largest rail and river cities in the country, with a population approaching 700,000. The McKinley Bridge, which opened that year across the Mississippi to East St. Louis, Illinois, was built to carry trains and streetcars between the two cities, and it tied the St. Louis yards to the freight lines on the Illinois side. Packing houses, breweries, shoe and tobacco factories, and the stockyards depended on those connections to move goods east and west. Residents who crossed the river daily would have seen the bridge as a practical answer to the congestion that had long slowed traffic at the river's edge.
