Cleveland in 1915 was one of the fastest-growing industrial cities in the country, with its population above half a million and its economy built on steel, oil refining, shipbuilding, and the iron ore that arrived by lake freighter at the docks along the Cuyahoga River. Standard Oil was headquartered in the city, and its wealth helped shape the banks, churches, and civic institutions that lined the avenues. Streetcar lines carried workers from crowded neighborhoods out to the open land on the west side, where new houses and small parks were replacing farms. Residents in those years knew the city for its manufacturing output and its lakefront commerce, and for the busy summer crowds that gathered at ballparks and open fields on weekends. This view of Brookside Street shows that growing edge of the city, where the sporting life of a working population met the expanding urban landscape.
