Brookside Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914 sat within Brookside Park on the city's south side, a green space that Cleveland's park system had developed as the city expanded. Cleveland was then one of the Midwest's leading industrial cities, with iron and steel works, shipyards, and factories along the Cuyahoga River and the Lake Erie shoreline feeding a steady flow of ore and freight through the port. Its growing population of wage earners made organized athletics popular, and ballparks and athletic grounds drew large crowds on weekends and holidays. Residents of the time knew the city as a busy lakefront manufacturing center, and a stadium like this one gave working families a place to gather and watch games together.
