Massillon and Canton, two Stark County cities about 10 miles apart in northeast Ohio, sat in the middle of one of the state's busiest industrial districts in 1906. Canton's factories and steel-related shops drew workers from the surrounding farms, while Massillon, on the Tuscarawas River and the old Ohio and Erie Canal corridor, had its own foundries and engine works and railroad connections. Football was a point of civic pride in Massillon, where local teams drew large crowds from the surrounding towns and the city became known as "Tiger City." Canton, the home of the late President William McKinley, took its own identity from his memory and from its place as the county seat. Together the two cities shared rail lines, newspapers, and a rivalry that residents followed closely.
