New York in 1905 was a city of about four million people, and its baseball fans followed the New York Giants with real loyalty. The club, managed by John McGraw, won the National League pennant that year and then beat the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series, with Christy Mathewson pitching three shutouts. The team played at the Polo Grounds on Coogan's Bluff in upper Manhattan, a short ride from the crowded tenements of Harlem and the newer elevated railway lines. Games drew working men and clerks as well as businessmen, and a Giants win could fill the saloons and streetcars with talk for days. For many New Yorkers, this roster was the city's team at its proudest.
