The Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan, pictured here in 1905, was the home of the New York Giants and one of the best-known sporting venues in the country. That October the Giants beat the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series, and the championship was won on this ground. Christy Mathewson, the Giants' pitcher, threw three shutouts in that series, and newspapers across the city followed every game. New York had grown past three million people after consolidation into Greater New York, and fans reached the park by elevated trains and streetcars from Harlem, the Bronx, and the lower boroughs. For many of them, the Polo Grounds was the place where the city's rapidly growing crowds gathered to watch baseball.
