Camp Lewis, on the prairie south of Tacoma, Washington, was in 1918 one of the largest army cantonments in the country, built in 1917 as a training ground for draftees entering the First World War. Tens of thousands of men passed through its barracks and drill fields that year, and the camp pumped money, labor demand and wartime traffic into a city whose mills and port were already busy with lumber and shipping. Mounted training remained part of army instruction even as tanks and motor transport gained ground, so horsemanship drills and riding exercises were a visible feature of daily life on the post. Local residents knew the camp as a constant presence on the southern edge of the city, and the influenza epidemic that autumn would soon test the crowded cantonment and the town around it.
