In 1905 Washington, D.C., was a government town of roughly 300,000 people, where federal clerks, military officers, and local tradesmen filled the streets and grandstands alike. The city's major-league baseball team, the Senators, had been a charter member of the American League since 1901, and its games drew crowds from across the district and from nearby Maryland and Virginia. Visiting teams like the Philadelphia Athletics, managed by Connie Mack, brought a rivalry that took on a regional edge, with Philadelphia fans traveling south by rail for weekend series. Baseball in this period was among the few entertainments that crossed the lines of class and race in the capital, even as segregation shaped who could sit where in the park.
