Love Field, on the northwest edge of Dallas, Texas, was a United States Army aviation training camp in 1918, during the final year of the First World War. Dallas was then a cotton-marketing and railroad city, and the Army chose the open prairie outside town for flight instruction, where student pilots learned on open-cockpit training planes in the dry Texas air. Local residents watched the biplanes overhead and followed the war news closely, since many of the young men at the field were local recruits or trainees from across the country. The camp's activity ended with the Armistice in November 1918, when the war's end sharply reduced the need for new pilots. The field would later become the city's municipal airport.
