In 1917, San Antonio was a city of more than 100,000 people that had grown steadily since the turn of the century, with its economy built on wholesaling, railroads, cattle and farm trade, and a large Mexican American community that gave the city much of its character. The United States' entry into World War I that spring brought a rush of military building to the region, and Camp Wilson, a temporary training site set up in the city's outskirts, was part of that wave. Fort Sam Houston had long anchored the Army's presence in town, and the new camps drew soldiers, contractors and supply trains into a city already used to cavalry and artillery on its streets. Residents knew the place as a crossroads of Texas military life, where the sound of drilling troops and the new flying machines of the Army's aviation program was becoming familiar.
